About Cefpodoxime oral drops
Cefpodoxime drops (an oral suspension) are a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic primarily used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in infants and children. It works by preventing bacteria from forming their protective cell walls, which ultimately kills them.
Primary Uses
This medication is prescribed for infections in several parts of the body, including:
Ear, Nose, and Throat: Manages acute otitis media (middle ear infection), sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis.
Urinary Tract: Effective against uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Skin and Soft Tissue: Used for bacterial skin infections like impetigo or cellulitis.
Gastrointestinal: Can be used to treat typhoid fever and bacterial diarrhea in pediatric patients.
Other: It may also be used to treat gonorrhea (in specific cases) and meningitis.
Important Considerations
Bacterial Only: It does not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
Administration: Drops are usually taken twice daily (every 12 hours). They are often recommended to be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce stomach upset.
Complete the Course: It is essential to finish the entire prescribed course even if symptoms improve early; stopping prematurely can lead to antibiotic resistance.
Age Limit: Generally not recommended for infants younger than 2 months of age.
Common Side Effects: These include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and headache. Consult a doctor if diarrhea is severe or bloody.
